A Wreath from Hands!

Has anyone ever made a Holiday Wreath out of a child's hands?

This was a lot of fun!

I traced my nephew's hands onto fusible web backed fabric (8 times) and ironed them into a circle.  Then I added some red berries and a bow.  Instant quilt wreath!
:)

I honestly can't remember where I got the idea.  I do know I didn't work off of a pattern.

Instead of a traditional zig zag or a blanket stitch I used a crazy free motion stitch to fill in the wreath around the hands.

It was all sort of improvised but I was happy with the results!!!

Happy Quilting!

Oh, you probably can't tell but I'm posting this at 12:30 am.  I shouldn't have had that soda with dinner.  Whoops!  Too much caffeine late in the evening!!  :)

Renovated Quilting Room!

Since I knew I was close to leaving my job, I started a renovation of my quilting room a couple of weeks ago.

I knew I wanted more storage that also looked nice.  I was VERY tired of not being able to find anything and the uncomfortable clutter associated with keeping so much on the floor.

Yuck!  This was no way to work and expect productivity.

So…I knew what I wanted.  I just needed to make it happen.

I went to Lowe’s and got the necessary shelving materials.

Here’s the start of my shelving.  I did the work myself!

Here’s what the shelves looked like once I moved everything back into the room.

Whew!  It was a bit of work!  This was the first time I have put up shelving.  I am SO HAPPY with the results!

Here’s what my “Wall of Rulers” looks like.  Oh my gosh, I can now find a ruler when I need it!

And here’s what the room looks like all put back together!  It is such a TREAT to use this room!

I think I have finally found the best way to utilize the space in this small room.  I just realized, I don’t have any pictures of the “fabric closet” or the design wall. I’ll have to include those later.

Woo-Hoo!  I’m LOVING this room!

It’s Time for Easter Dog Collars!

I know it’s not Easter yet but I’m so excited because I am WAY ahead of the game!  Most of the time I’m scrambling a week before the holiday hits.  I stay up late at night with a general feeling of crankiness at the amount of work I still have to get done.

That’s no good- this is supposed to be FUN!

If you remember from my last post, here are the fabrics I chose for Easter.

The part of the collar that takes the most work is turning the fabric into the long “strap” or “band”.  Adding the hardware is actually the shortest step.  Here are some of the smaller sizes of collars made into bands, already Scotch guarded and ready for the hardware.

My dogs tend to get dirty so the Scotch guard is a must!

I love these fabrics….so cute.

Next step…assembling the finished product!

I know I've been absent...

No...we didn't have a white Christmas.  This picture was actually taken on my street at Thanksgiving!!

I know I've been away from my blog for about a week now.  Christmas just really took over and although there's been plenty of sewing going on....none of it has made it to my blog.

So...I'm back in gear and will start posting right away.

I need to fill you in on the t-shirt quilt (it was finished in time!), the rest of the denim jean rag pattern and it's progress and so much more!

I hope you all had a nice holiday season and I can't wait to fill you in on what I've been doing!!

Welcome to the Twisted Scissor Quilt Shoppe, owned and operated by Karen Smith!

Karen has an absolutely lovely shop located just outside of Reno in Sparks, NV. (For those not from the area, Reno and Sparks have no clear division and one city melds into the other.)
When you meet Karen you will be instantly won over by her friendly, warm smile. She is a true people person and has created a fun, exciting quilt shop!

Karen is the shoppe's one and only employee and if you ask her what she does for a living she'll tell you, "I run with scissors!"
This joke extends beyond quilting because in a shared next door space you'll find Karen's hair salon!
She's not kidding when she says she spends her days "running with scissors"!

Karen carries a great line of current patterns and likes to showcase various designers.
Twisted Scissor has a wonderful display of quilt samples hanging on the walls.  On the day of my visit there were quite a few 3-D samples where the designs were literally jumping off the quilt!  Absolutely adorable child quilts!

This is a small shop but Karen makes use of every bit of space.  The displays are darling and the merchandise is easy to see.  As Karen says, she's paying for every square inch so she's going to use it!!

When I asked Karen to define her shop she said that people could expect to find lots of color, bright fabrics and clean, crisp prints!  I would definitely agree!
Above is a picture of the quilt they designed for this year's
Pony Express Shop Hop 2010.
What a beautiful quilt!
Although this was only the shop's second year participating, the Shop Hop was a huge success!!  Word is spreading about our local Shop Hop and people are coming!  Can't wait until next year!

Karen makes pricing extremely easy.
Unless a fabric is specially marked all of her fabric is $9.50/yd.  In addition she has a large selection of sale fabrics and is constantly getting in new fabrics!  There is always something new to see!

Here you can see another example of her beautiful 3-D quilt samples!  I LOVE the pink and black!!

Every bit of space is cleverly used.  The displays are cute, fun and fresh!
One of the nice things about Karen's shop is that not only can you buy fabric off the bolt in whatever yardage you need but she also precuts
1/2 yard and 1 yard bundles

I LOVE the convenience of this and I usually find that I spend much more money than normal with the precut bundles!  It's just TOO easy to shop!  :)

Below is a picture of Karen and her daughter, Dani, at this year's Shop Hop.

Thank you so much Karen for your hospitality!!
You have a beautiful shop and I can't wait to come back!

Don't forget to visit her on Facebook at: Twisted Scissor Quilt Shoppe

Thanks for stopping by!
Heather
