Guess how many yards of fabric… Win Fat Quarters!

With the new year and thoughts of organizing running through my head I decided to “re-organize” my stash fabric.

It really was overdue…this is a bit of a sampling of the shelves- just a bit mind you!

I finally got to the place where I have folded and MEASURED all of my fabric that is at least a 1/2 yard or larger.  Everything smaller is currently in a “scrap” bin for additional sorting.

This is the first time I have actually measured my fabric stash.  I was pretty shocked by the final count.

Sad to think that this doesn’t include: fat quarters, kit fabric, WIP and a huge box of scraps!

So, here it is.  How many yards of fabric do you think this is?
**Only estimate what is on the Three shelves, ignore any miscellaneous fabric on the side or below.

Just respond with your best guess (in the form of a comment) and you could be the lucky recipient of…

5 Valentines’ Day Fat Quarters!

FQ Valentines #2
FQ Valentines #1FQ Valentines #1FQ Valentines #1

The person with the number closest to the actual amount of stash will be the winner!!
***(PLEASE guess in yards-it’s the only way I function)!!!

**Note, in the event that a number is chosen more than once by multiple folks, I will assign each individual a number in the order they responded and let the random number generator choose!
**Lastly, please remember to double check that the option to receive email in your blog profile is active OR just include your email address in your comment, otherwise, I can’t contact your for a mailing address and your fat quarters must go home with someone else!

I’ll close the poll Sunday, January 23rd @ 5pm PST.  Good luck!!!

Thanks everyone for playing.  Hope you’re having a terrific week!

Welcome to the Twisted Scissor Quilt Shoppe, owned and operated by Karen Smith!

Karen has an absolutely lovely shop located just outside of Reno in Sparks, NV. (For those not from the area, Reno and Sparks have no clear division and one city melds into the other.)
When you meet Karen you will be instantly won over by her friendly, warm smile. She is a true people person and has created a fun, exciting quilt shop!

Karen is the shoppe's one and only employee and if you ask her what she does for a living she'll tell you, "I run with scissors!"
This joke extends beyond quilting because in a shared next door space you'll find Karen's hair salon!
She's not kidding when she says she spends her days "running with scissors"!

Karen carries a great line of current patterns and likes to showcase various designers.
Twisted Scissor has a wonderful display of quilt samples hanging on the walls.  On the day of my visit there were quite a few 3-D samples where the designs were literally jumping off the quilt!  Absolutely adorable child quilts!

This is a small shop but Karen makes use of every bit of space.  The displays are darling and the merchandise is easy to see.  As Karen says, she's paying for every square inch so she's going to use it!!

When I asked Karen to define her shop she said that people could expect to find lots of color, bright fabrics and clean, crisp prints!  I would definitely agree!
Above is a picture of the quilt they designed for this year's
Pony Express Shop Hop 2010.
What a beautiful quilt!
Although this was only the shop's second year participating, the Shop Hop was a huge success!!  Word is spreading about our local Shop Hop and people are coming!  Can't wait until next year!

Karen makes pricing extremely easy.
Unless a fabric is specially marked all of her fabric is $9.50/yd.  In addition she has a large selection of sale fabrics and is constantly getting in new fabrics!  There is always something new to see!

Here you can see another example of her beautiful 3-D quilt samples!  I LOVE the pink and black!!

Every bit of space is cleverly used.  The displays are cute, fun and fresh!
One of the nice things about Karen's shop is that not only can you buy fabric off the bolt in whatever yardage you need but she also precuts
1/2 yard and 1 yard bundles.

I LOVE the convenience of this and I usually find that I spend much more money than normal with the precut bundles!  It's just TOO easy to shop!  :)

Below is a picture of Karen and her daughter, Dani, at this year's Shop Hop.

Thank you so much Karen for your hospitality!!
You have a beautiful shop and I can't wait to come back!

Finished the Denim Quilt!

Update:  The pattern is complete!
You can purchase a copy at my Etsy Shop:
So I finally finished clipping the jean quilt, then brushing, washing and drying and here are the finished results!

I love the way it turned out.  I thought I liked it before I clipped it but I really like it now that it's been clipped and washed.

I've made this type of quilt in the past and this time I decided to "prep" the raw edges prior to washing and drying.  I've noticed that sometimes these kind of quilts need to be washed several times to get the full fraying effect.

So, this time I "brushed" the raw edges with a hard bristled plastic brush- think of your toliet bowl brush- the kind with really stiff bristles (I didn't use a toliet bowl brush, however!).

Here's what the quilt looked like as I progressed.  I scrubbed the edges backward and foreward before it ever went into the washing machine.  It was really frayed and oh-my-gosh it sure shed!

It seemed to do the job, though, because it came out of the dryer (first time) perfectly frayed!

I just love this type of quilt and I love that I am using up someone's discarded jeans to make a whole new creation.

Thanks so much for stopping by!
Heather  :)
