Tiny Ticker Tape Tutorial
Over at Sew Mama Sew, I discovered a really cute way to use up small scraps with a tutorial for making a Tiny Ticker Tape Quilt for dolls.
(It was actually based on a quilt from Crazy Mom Quilts- the original was a much larger version, as you can see in this link, and if I'm reading it correctly, Crazy Mom Quilts is actually the creator of this doll quilt as well.)
Since I have a 4 year old niece I decided to try my hand at making one!
Here's what it looked like before binding...
And with binding...
I gave it to my niece this weekend and she happily agreed to pose with it out in the sunshine.
She's so beautiful!
Fallon Quilt Show
A few weeks ago, my Mom and I got away to the Fallon Quilt Show in (where else?) Fallon, NV.
Only about an hour from Reno, we set off early in the morning and arrived just as the show was opening that Saturday morning. We weren't really sure what to expect since we had never been to this show before. The show is sponsored by the Nevada Quilt Guild, a guild representing the rural communities of Nevada. There is a LOT of wide open space in this state and only a few large cities (i.e. Reno, Las Vegas) so this guild supports the smaller communities in Northern Nevada.
As Fallon is a smaller area, the show itself, was small but represented the community as well as any large quilt show. There were a handful of vendors representing local quilt businesses as well as those who traveled long distances.
I was particularly "smitten" with an adorable shop called the Rusty Crow Quilt Shop. My Mom and I STOCKED up on Moda fabric. This is her going through piles of fabric on the floor!
Can you see her down there? :)
I bought a GREAT pattern at the Rusty Crow (in addition to plenty of fabric). Called the "Scrappy Nest", this is just the ultimate pattern for getting rid of scraps with minimal effort for an amazing finished project!!
Okay, this is a WAY cute pattern with great directions!! I love that she even inserts a sense of humor into the directions! ;)
You can see in this close up just how adorable this quilt really is!!
Just think how many scraps you could use up!
Shawn, the owner, is absolutely delightful! She is obviously extremely talented not only as a pattern designer but her booth was fun and brimming with "quilting eye candy"!
If you want to know where she's going to be next, check out this page from her website: Rusty Crow Show Schedule.
My Mom and I drooled over the quilts on display. She is a new longarmer (a proud Nolting owner) and, specifically, she was looking for quilting ideas. We were just blown away by the quality of the quilting! The more we focused in on the quilting, the more we saw the complex, quality of these quilts!
I've included a few of my favorites from the show.
This quilt was titled "Fancy That" and was made by Christine Carpiaux.
It's difficult to see here but all of those quilted lines you see fanning out in the quilt are HAND Quilted!!
This quilt was titled "The Cat's Meow" by Sandra Goodfellow.Because of the way the quilts were set up, I could only get a side view of this quilt but it was simply BREATHTAKING!
I loved her colors, loved, loved, loved them!
I noticed that this particular pattern was the subject of a Mystery Quilt Retreat and there were numerous quilts made up of this pattern at the show.
It was exciting to see all of the different ways this quilt looked based on the choice of colors and fabric!

I was amazed at this quilt although the name should have given it away, I suppose!
Made by Jan Reranzone, the quilt was called, "Cheater, Cheater, Cheater".
As you may be guessing, it was made from a Cheater Cloth but I SWEAR, it was impossible to tell!

Hat Creek Camping Trip
We got away for a few days in May to a place we discovered last year. Hat Creek Resort has some really cute cabins with of all the essentials! No need to pack silverware or dishes. I know, I know, it's not REALLY camping. I mean we have electricity, a bed, couch, cable and a shower. So..."camping" it's not. However, it is out in the woods and there is a campfire out back and fly fishing for the hubby, so it's as close to camping as we get anymore!
I took my sewing machine and worked on my "Less than Traditional" quilt. I got all of my circles sewed into units of four. The kitchen table was well suited to my travel machine and I had plenty of room to work.
We stayed in one of their largest cabins this time so we had LOTS of room to move around. In comparison to the very small place we stayed in last time, this was pretty nice!
We took two of the dogs and they seemed to have a good time as well. What dog doesn't love running around in the cool mountain air chasing squirrels?
Pearl is so cute!!
Here's my set up. I was happy to get all of those pieces put together. Now that I have sets of four, I need to put them together into larger sections. (Sigh...more work).
Here I am, camping attire and all! See that stack of circles in the background? I got a LOT done!! :)
Lots of fun in just a few short days. Getting away is so rejuvenating!
Sew What Quilts -Redding, CA
A few weeks ago, my husband and I got away from Reno and the dogs for a brief while and ventured to Northern California for a long weekend. We spent some time camping and on our way home we stopped at a few quilt stores in Redding and Chico. The quilt store in Redding is Fabulous! A don't-miss for sure!

Sandwiched between a boat shop and a motorcycle shop, Sew What Quilts is conveniently located in an extra large building chocked full of fabric and yarn. There aren't too many quilt shops where you can send your significant other to his choice of "man store" while you browse the fabric section! And hey, if boats and motorcycles aren't his thing, they even have a big, comfortable couch where he can kick his feet up and rest. Now that's service!!
Extremely spacious with tall ceilings, this shop carries the latest and greatest fabrics not to mention a plethora of whatever else you may be looking for. They have a LOT of bolts.
They also have a very large selection of quilting books. This was a treat to browse through as well.
Now, I'm not a knitter but I have to say that their yarn shop was very impressive. Lots of variety and the shop itself (which is inside the quilt shop), was bright and contemporary. It exuded F-U-N! I think my Mother-in-Law the crotchet-er would have been mighty jealous!
The staff was very friendly and ready to assist in any way. I had the good fortune of meeting the owner, Lori. I was thrilled that she gave me her blessing to write this blog article and post some pictures here.
It was easy to write nice things about this shop because it was simply beautiful and well worth seeing!
I enjoyed browsing their website and was inspired by all of the charity work they do. They raise money for free local mammograms, collect hats in winter and every time a customer brings in their own shopping bag they donate money to local missionary work!
Bravo!

Sew What Quilts is a true member of this community so remember to support them so they can continue to grow and fluorish. They need us if they plan to serve our communities for many years to come.
I found this quilt hanging next to the cash register. How cool is this?? Martini glasses and shakers!!!! I love it!
Hope you're having a good day.

Finished the Denim Quilt!
Update: The pattern is complete!
You can purchase a copy at my Etsy Shop:
So I finally finished clipping the jean quilt, then brushing, washing and drying and here are the finished results!
I love the way it turned out. I thought I liked it before I clipped it but I really like it now that it's been clipped and washed.
I've made this type of quilt in the past and this time I decided to "prep" the raw edges prior to washing and drying. I've noticed that sometimes these kind of quilts need to be washed several times to get the full fraying effect.
So, this time I "brushed" the raw edges with a hard bristled plastic brush- think of your toliet bowl brush- the kind with really stiff bristles (I didn't use a toliet bowl brush, however!).
Here's what the quilt looked like as I progressed. I scrubbed the edges backward and foreward before it ever went into the washing machine. It was really frayed and oh-my-gosh it sure shed!
It seemed to do the job, though, because it came out of the dryer (first time) perfectly frayed!
I just love this type of quilt and I love that I am using up someone's discarded jeans to make a whole new creation.
Thanks so much for stopping by!
Heather :)
